1. Morgan
Page & Gregory Shiff "All I Know (Remixes)"
Released on Bedrock Records
East Coast US producer Morgan Page has been
making inroads in the last few months, and getting the widespread
recognition he so rightly deserves. This collaboration with Gregory
Shiff entitled 'All I Know' took everyone by surprise and become
one of the standout tracks on Bedrock in the last few months.
Since then he's gone on to produce an equally impressive single
for SAW Recordings called 'Falling', and now he returns to Bedrock
again where 'All I Know' gets the remix treatment.
Sticking close to the template of the original
but giving it a more upbeat and driving twist, 'Hernan Cattaneo
& Martin Garcia' deliver a masterful remix on the a-side.
Leaving Astrid Suryanto's immense vocal to it's own devices, Hernan
& Martin lay down some subtle grooves and a killer bassline
that will leave no excuse for any DJ who found the original to
be too minimal for their tastes, as this mix is a right little
stormer for those peak time sets.
Over on the flip, 'Timewriter' makes his Bedrock
debut, with a stunning remix that fans of his work will be fawning
over, and for those who have never heard of him, this is a small
indication of what this talented producer is capable of. Funky
rhythms and stabs are woven into smooth breakbeat layers, and
coupled with the big vocal lead, this is a stirring remix that
takes the original to a whole new level.
Many people probably would never have expected
to see Timewriter on the Bedrock label, but it just shows how
far and wide the label's scope is spreading more and more, and
following on from the superb original 12", this set of remixes
are respectful and at the same time take the track to an entirely
different audience, something Bedrock are always striving to do
and do so quite admirably here.
2. Bedrock "Santiago"
Released on Bedrock Records
Digweed and Muir have always known how to create
a great atmosphere right from the beginning. Be it the unforgettable
sounds of "For What You Dream Of", to the dark and gritty
groove of "Voices", to the anthemic peak time feel of
"Heaven Scent", right down to the subtle beauty of "Forge".
One can find themselves having quite a hard time predicting the
direction that the next Bedrock single may take, but it is almost
certain now that whichever direction the guys decide to take,
they will succeed. "Santiago" succeeds in many ways,
and with a strong set of mixes this will likely have some very
widespread appeal.
Bedrock's own "La Coruna" mix is
first up, and to say the least I was very impressed by it. The
sly groove chugs forward with bouncing rhythm, as the overlying
melodies craft a great atmosphere. A light vocal sample weaves
in and out at just the right moments as to not become a main focus,
but certainly adds a layer of depth to the composition. This one
is sure to put a smile on the faces of both new and old Bedrock
fans alike.
The duo of Parallel Sound have taken the world
by storm over the last three years or so, boasting a truly amazing
live show which pushes the genre envelope to new heights. Their
take on "Santiago" is more clean cut than the "La
Coruna" mix, and the percussion gives us more of a driving
feel. Focus is shifted to different elements, giving the mix a
highly refreshing feel, whilst still remaining faithful to the
flipside. A solid mix giving DJs more opportunity to use the track
if the flipside didn't work for them.
Both mixes lived up to the Bedrock name, and
you can be sure you'll be hearing a lot more of this track over
the coming months. Parallel Sound are touring quite extensively
over the next few months, so check to see if they are coming to
a town near you, they are well worth checking out! Also look out
for the Remix Disc of "Santiago", boasting an alternative
take from Bedrock themselves, as well as a very unique and twisted
approach from Guy Gerber!
3. Bedrock "Santiago (Remixes)"
Released on Bedrock Records
It's been some time since we last saw anything
from John Digweed & Nick Muir's Bedrock project, with the
last single 'Forge' released back in 2003. With the duo involved
in numerous projects, both individually and collectively, not
to mention Digweed's extensive globe trotting with his DJ career,
it's little wonder that there's such a gap between singles, and
this only adds to the buzz that builds around each one as their
existence becomes known, and that's what exactly happened with
'Santiago' after it's debut on John Digweed's Global Gathering
Essential Mix.
Whilst Bedrock's main 'La Coruna Mix' may
not have been quite what the long standing faithful expected,
it's uplifting mood and heady Balearic rhythms carved it's own
niche throughout the latter half of 2005 and took the "Bedrock
sound" in a new, yet unexpected direction. Meanwhile, the
'St James Mix' here on this remix 12" takes the more "traditional"
route, a funky pumping bassline driving through a tightly produced
arrangement of soaring synths and chunky beats. In some ways it's
still more subdued than much of of Digweed & Muir's previous
work, but has all the right elements that make it a guaranteed
hit on the floor.
Guy Gerber's 'Hot Rod Mix' then rounds off
the package with a twisted and dirty house interpretation that
would find favour from electro and tech lovers alike. A tough,
gritty bassline, acid style synths and an oddly captivating melody
hook that preludes the filthy beat finale place this mix in a
different category to all the others. In some ways it's far removed
from any of the other mixes in many ways, but still maintains
just enough elements that acknowledge it's association.
Without a doubt, 'Santiago' is a turning point
in many ways, both for Bedrock as a production outfit, and for
the label itself, the output of which has become increasingly
more varied with each release over the last six months or so.
With that in mind, it shall be interesting to see where 2006 takes
Bedrock, and also the individual careers and projects of both
Digweed and Muir.
